Canadian Residency Obligations

To maintain your Permanent Resident status in Canada, you must meet certain residency obligations, including staying in Canada for at least 730 days within the last five years. These 730 days do not need to be continuous, and in some cases, time spent outside Canada may also be counted toward this requirement.

For individuals who have been permanent residents for more than five years, residency is calculated based on the five years immediately before assessment. For those who have been PRs for less than five years, they must demonstrate that they will be able to meet the 730-day requirement within their initial five-year period after becoming a permanent resident. Canadian citizenship is optional and can be applied for after approximately three years of residence, and Canada allows multiple citizenships.
