Biometrics

Biometrics are required by the Canadian immigration authorities for most visa and permit applications. These include fingerprints and a photograph that are used to verify identity and strengthen application security.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires biometrics for several immigration categories as part of the application process.

When Biometrics Are Required

You normally need to provide biometrics when applying for:

  • Visitor visa
  • Work permit or study permit (except US nationals)
  • Permanent residence
  • Refugee or asylum status
  • Extension of stay in Canada (visitor record)
  • Work or study permit extension

Exemptions and Special Cases

Some applicants may be exempt from providing biometrics under certain conditions.

During COVID-19 temporary measures, applicants already in Canada applying for temporary residence extensions or restoration of status were exempt if they were:

  • In Canada
  • Applying to extend or restore status as a student, worker, or visitor
  • Applying for a work permit, study permit, visitor visa, or temporary resident permit

Validity of Biometrics

If you have already provided biometrics in the last 10 years for a visitor visa, work permit, or study permit and they are still valid, you do not need to submit them again when applying for a new visa or permit in the same category.

Important Note

Biometrics are an important part of the Canadian immigration process and help ensure secure and accurate identity verification for all applicants planning to enter or stay in Canada.
